I love a beauty gimmick as much as the next blogger, but it’s even better when said gimmick turns out to be brilliant for long-term skincare benefits. Case in point, the jade roller. Yes, it’s ridiculously Instagram-worthy because… I’m a basic millenial and I am here for crystals. It’s actually much better than an Instagram prop though, and I’ve been using one in my skincare routine for the last couple of years.
What is a jade roller?
Jade has been used in Chinese practices for thousands of years. Jade is traditionally associated with warding off negative energy and relieving anxiety. A jade roller is a tool made entirely from jade for use as a facial massager. It can help with lymphatic drainage which ‘detoxifies’ the skin. It also works on improving skin’s natural glow by improving circulation on the skin. The jade itself feels really cool on the skin upon use, and it definitely feels relaxing to work it into the skin; it makes relieving tension in facial muscles at the end of the day really easy.
How do you use a jade roller?
Ok, so it can be used as a massage tool anytime, but I find it works best when used in conjunction with a serum or oil. It essentially works the product into the skin, and the slip an oil gives can help to really work the tool into the facial muscles. It can be used morning or night, and can also be kept in the fridge for maximum coldness to help de-puff.
When using it, I tend to just roll it across the face, making sure to pay special attention to the jawline as it helps with lymphatic drainage. On my face, I use it in an upwards motion because… I’m trying to trick gravity. When it comes to trying to promote lymphatic drainage, I go from the centre of my face in an outwards motion and then just go to town. I grind my teeth without realising, so smoothing out the tension in my jaw always feels really relaxing.
