I think the concept of deodorant being this vaguely bad thing for your underarms has been around for a while. There’s the aluminium which causes a seal on the skin and means toxins are trapped within the body. There’s lots of scary stories about deodorant ingredients floating round on the internet, but the fact remains that we use deodorant to stop us from being too sweaty. So, the chemicals sound bad but they do the job so things continue. I tried a salt stick of deodorant years ago, and was left distinctly unimpressed. The Best Natural Deodorants have come a long way since then, though. They’re well worth investigating and these all smell a lot better than your standard can.
Organic Elsa’s Natural Deodorant Creme
The packaging for this comes in a compact little (recyclable) tin, so it’s great for throwing in your bag and it’s unisex so one for sharing on overnight breaks. The formula itself is a cream that turns into a powder once rubbed into the skin (it comes with a bamboo spatula). As it turns into a powder texture it leaves skin feeling dry and it means you can get dressed quickly without any pesky white marks. This smells beautiful, and really fresh; tea tree oil, peppermint and patchouli all work together to naturally deodorise and detoxify the skin without being too strong.
Free from aluminium, parabens, bicarbonate of soda, alcohol
100% natural, vegan, cruelty-free
Best for: leaving underarms dry all day
Ben & Anna Vanilla Orchid
And the award for the nicest packaging goes to… This brand has the most beautiful packaging and it’s plastic-free! This one is the most similar to a traditional deodorant in terms of how it applies – it’s a stick that you just swipe on. The tube is just pushed up from underneath, so it’s super simple to use. Texture wise, it’s super soft so it’s best used when gently swiped on. It also does best at room temperature so I’ve been leaving mine in the fridge. There are loads of different scents – Persian Lime, Nordic Timber, Provence, Vanilla Orchid, Indian Mandarine, Pink Grapefruit. They’re all quite strongly scented, so it definitely lingers nicely on the skin and acts as a super natural perfume.
Free from aluminium, PEG’s, parabens, phtalates, gluten
Best for: Nice scents smelling good all day
Weleda Citrus Deodorant
Weleda is one of the best known natural brands around, so they’ve got one of the longest-standing deodorants. There’s two different formulas, the liquid and the traditional roll-on. I prefer the liquid spray as it feels really nice and cooling on the skin when applied. The citrus scent also smells gorgeous, and definitely welcome in this scorching heat. Very citrus fresh, with lemon and orange essential oils. The Weleda formula doesn’t work by stopping sweating but just neutralises body odour meaning no irritation, itchiness or clogged pores. Also, a recyclable glass bottle so minimal plastic.
Free from: aluminium, synthetic fragrances, artificial preservatives, parabens
Best for: Citrus lovers and perfect for midday touchups
