I love skincare and I’m fairly fickle when it comes to my beauty choices. One brand that manages to tick all my skincare boxes is REN. Plenty of choice, across multiple ranges? Check. Natural-based? Check. Results-driven? Check. Having used the brand consistently for years and years (seven so far), I thought that A Guide To REN Clean Skincare would definitely be helpful. For those looking to explore the brand in a little more detail, or those entirely new to REN. This is a very comprehensive guide, so maybe grab a cup of tea…
Clean, safe skincare, with no toxins, no harsh or controversial chemicals, and no potential irritants – ever.
The Radiance Range
The radiance range from REN has to be my favourite, as I’m always after some seriously glowing skin! There’s a lot of products, too… A mask, toner, exfoliator, serum, BB cream and body serum. My ultimate pick would be the ready steady glow daily AHA tonic, which is a beautiful gentle acid toner to be used post-cleanse. It doesn’t sting in the slightest, smells like oranges and the ingredients do a great job at leaving skin looking brighter. There’s lactic acid to promote cell turnover, salicin to help leave pores clean and azelaic acid to improve hydration and elasticity in the skin. Coming in a close second are the night time facial, which I use a few times a week in place of a night cream, and the glycolic radiance renewal mask, which is my go-to for instantly brighter skin. There’s also the radiance perfection serum, which is pretty fabulous when used in the morning for some added glow and pollution protection.
Say hello to REN’s extensive range of cleansers for every skin type or concern. The rose centifolia range is made up of a whole host of different textures depending on what you’re looking for. There’s a gel, balm, exfoliator, water, milk and a foaming wash. My favourite is the Rosa Centifolia No.1 Purity Cleansing Balm as it feels so luxurious on the skin. It’s a lovely rich and unctuous texture, which turns into a milk when mixed with water. I tend to take a few minutes massaging this into the skin before removing with a warm flannel. Mmm, and it smells like rose, which is just the dream. Can be used for removing eye makeup as well, but I find it leaves my eyes slightly blurry.
There are two makeup items in the REN lineup – the BB cream (which is not spectacular) and the REN Perfect Canvas Primer (which is). Free of silicones, which always feel disgusting and cloying on the skin, the primer is a nice skincare-makeup hybrid. It uses naturally occurring sugars to lift and tighten the skin prior to makeup application. I like this one for its skin-smoothing abilities ahead of makeup. It doesn’t add a lot of glow, or help to control oil especially well but really does as the name says and creates a smooth and even canvas for the skin.
The Vita Mineral range is what I would consider REN’s version of skin food. All designed to provide skin with the essential mineral it needs for optimum health, as well as being really soothing on the skin. If skin is feeling a little dry or lacking in nourishment, I would gravitate towards this range. I love the Vita Mineral Lip Balm, which lives in my bag. It has shea butter, cocoa seed butter and calendula (which is great for repairing and healing the lips). For a night time skin treat designed to rehydrated, the Vita Mineral Omega 3 Optimum Skin Oil is lovely too. It’s very rich on the skin, leaving the complexion looking healthier by morning.
This is the first range I ever tried from REN, around seven years ago! I do think my skin used to be a lot more sensitive than it is now, because it seems happily with acids and exfoliating now. Back in the day, my skin used to get inflamed easily though, and the evercalm range is what I tended to reach for. It’s a fantastic simple and pared back solutions-led range designed to calm and soothe. The range works by calming redness in the skin with seaweed extract and then the oils chosen help to repair the skin’s barrier. Super gentle, and the Evercalm Ultra Comforting Rescue Mask is good to have on hand for a sensitive skin flare-up. I like the Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream for gentle all-day hydration when used in conjunction with the Evercalm Anti-Redness Serum.
There are two body ranges from REN – the Atlantic Kelp & Magnesium and the Moroccan Rose. Both are pretty gorgeous, depending on whether you prefer clean or floral scents. My definite pick would be the Atlantic Kelp Body Wash as it’s divine to help wake you up in the morning. It has a new bottle made from 100% recycled & 20% ocean plastic at the moment as well. REN is big on actually making changes to plastic consumption, which is just so important. Both ranges have body washes, scrubs and oils. Also definitely recommended from me is the Pillow Spray, which I use every single night. One for those who are big into sleeping (like me) or who struggle to drift off.
