I basically feel naked without perfume. It’s the last step in getting dressed, and one of my favourite things to try. I’m not a nose but I do love me some perfume. When in Grasse back in June, I got to go on a perfume making class at Galimard. I know. Dream come true. When Making My Own Perfume, I learnt a few things about the notes I do and don’t like…
Galimard Perfume Workshop
In Grasse, there are three main perfume houses – Molinard, Fragrinard and Galimard. We went for Galimard, as their workshops seemed to feature the most guidance from the house nose. I definitely want to move to Grasse and train to be a nose – it takes seven or so years to become fully trained in all things perfume and become a qualified nose. At the workshop, you get your own perfume organ, filled with all the bottles and endless scent possibilities. It’s definitely a little overwhelming because there are so many options. I’m also not someone who has one particular note in perfume they like… I am not loyal. In terms of how perfume is made from the organ, we have the base notes on the bottom shelf, heart notes in the middle and opening notes on the top. Half of them are male, half are female but unisex is the way to go, I think.
During the class, we were told to pick our favourite base note, which the nose running the class then helped us to match with a few other complementary scents. This was very exciting, and the beauty lover’s equivalent of being a kid in a candy store. Then we picked the heart notes before measuring them out in exact quantities and pouring them into the beaker. In the photo below you can see my extreme levels of concentration because I did not want to fuck. it. up.
So, I named my finished perfume Black Mamba. Naming perfumes is a lot harder than I thought it was, so I went with something I hope Beatrix Kiddo would wear. The final ‘mix’ of the perfume is a little nerve-wracking as you might like all of the notes individually but there’s no guarantee that you’ll like them combined into a parfum. Luckily I did! Post-creation you have to leave it alone for ten days to let it mature to perfection, too.
Base notes – Amber, Patchouli, Tonka
Heart notes – Rose petal, Ginger, Violet
Top notes – English tea, Lavender
