So it’s established we all love a bit of glow? Some of us (guilty) have far too many highlighters and love to look lit. Heading into the cooler months, I am edging more and more towards something a little more polished. I’m talking A Modern Approach To Matte Makeup. Nothing flat or lifeless here; I’m all about a luminous matte finish that looks like skin but better™.
Matte just got a whole lot more exciting…
The Modern Matte Base
So the product that sparked this entire ode to matte… The new YSL all hours liquid foundation, which has truly redefined how seamless a matte foundation can look. I was introduced to it by Fabled, and I’m so glad because I definitely overlook YSL as a brand a lot of the time. Not anymore… The coverage is flawless without masking. The key to a modern matte base is definitely that it needs to look like skin; no dullness and dryness here! It’s a luminous matte finish, not a powdery caked concotion. Just skin looking its best without compromising on longevity and coverage. The texture remains really comfortable to wear all day. None of that ‘I need to clean my face asap’ feeling that we all know too well…
The Modern Matte Eye
Matte eyeshadow might not be new. It might not be the most exciting. But man is it easy. I’m talking a one-stop wash of colour all over the lid. It takes seconds but takes your makeup to the next level instantly. Plus it really jams nicely with this entire vibe I have going. Favourites include Laura Mercier shadow sticks and my Anastasia Beverley Hills shadows because they’re pigmented, blend well and are super smooth. Taking a matte shade on a fluffy brush, a la MAC 217, and using a windscreen wiper motion to diffuse the colours is as easy as it gets when it comes to makeup. Best served with lots of mascara.
The Modern Matte Lip
Oh we are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to lipstick launches right now. Being a matte-finish fanatic for years now, this comes as happy news. I mentioned the new Bobbi Brown finish in this post and I’m still loving the super matte finish for daily wear. Also new are the Mac powder-finish lipsticks which give a soft, diffused colour. Such a modern and imperfect way to wear colour that just feels so right. The packaging is rubberised matte, too. Very satisfying. Although I’ve yet to get my hands on them, I’ve also seen new matte finishes from Armani and Chanel too.
Are you mad about matte?
